11 Ways to Avoid Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common problem among men and even some women. Reasons could be due to hormonal change, medical condition, medications, unbalanced diet or stress. Aside from that, it is a natural phenomenon. People experience hair loss as we age.


How can we prevent hair loss especially at a young age? Here are 11 tips.


  1. Avoid brushing wet hair. When hair is wet, it is at their weakest state. They can easily be pulled off when wet. Also, avoid frequent brushing as it can injure your hair. Use a wide-toothed comb or use your fingers instead.

  2. Avoid too much friction. Hair when comb too much can increase hair fall. Drying your hair using a towel aggressively can also increase hair fall. Avoid doing these things as much as possible.

  3. Keep away from hair coloring. Dyeing our hair does not inhibit hair growth but it damages the treated hair. Hydrogen peroxide and ammonia which are present in most hair dyes loosens the hair. They also physically weaken the hair shafts increasing breakage which can cause hair loss.

  4. Start a diet high in protein. Hair loss can be caused by lack of protein. This is normally experienced by people who go on a crash diet removing protein-packed food from their menu. To avoid these, maintain a good amount of protein in your diet to promote hair growth.

  5. Keep yourself hydrated. Hair, just like plants, need water to develop and grow. Water helps flush toxins from the body making your hair grow and remain healthy.

  6. Minimize your regular exercise level. I now being active is good but studies show that excessive exercise may lead to hair fall. The body can experience chronic stress conditions causing more hair loss than usual.

  7. Avoid the heat. Frequent exposure to heat such as hair dying or even the sun weakens hair proteins causing weakness in the hair follicles making them fragile leading to hair loss.

  8. Reduce stress. Stress is not a new thing to us and we are all aware that it causes bad things. One is hair loss. Try to do relaxing activities to minimize stress such as yoga and meditation.

  9. Change how you style your hair. If you suddenly experienced hair loss, it may be because of a new product you are using or a new hairstyle you are trying (such as ponytails or braids). Your hair probably is not used to that new product or style. Revert to the old one or try something else.

  10. Check your medications. If you are treating an illness, you have to be aware that some medicines have a side effect which causes hair loss. Consult a doctor regarding your medications and try to find an alternative medicine which does not cause hair loss.
